Senior Technical Program Manager, Factory Orchestration

Intrinsic · Corporate · Website

Job Description

Intrinsic is an AI robotics group at Google aiming to reimagine the potential of industrial robotics. Our team believes that advances in AI, perception and simulation will redefine what’s possible for industrial robotics in the near future – with software and data at the core.

Our mission is to make industrial robotics intelligent, accessible, and usable for millions more businesses, entrepreneurs, and developers. We are a dynamic team of engineers, roboticists, designers, and technologists who are passionate about unlocking the creative and economic potential of industrial robotics.

Role

As a Technical Program Manager (TPM) for Factory Orchestration, you’ll manage the delivery of cutting edge heterogeneous automation technology and robotic solutions to our customers and partners. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with some amazing and talented people, who also happen to be working on highly creative and ambitious efforts.

You will manage and coordinate engagements with industry leading companies and partners of Intrinsic. While each engagement differs to some extent, they generally share the aim to deliver our cutting edge technology and products to make robots usable by more people and businesses at scale in a radically simplified way. To achieve that, you will facilitate alignment on scope & feasibility and manage execution of internal development and external delivery. All while collaborating closely with a wide range of external and internal stakeholders - Product Managers, Program Managers, Software Engineers, Roboticists, Machine-Learning experts, and leadership.

As part of the Factory Orchestration team, you will collaborate with experts across many topics within robotics, logistics, and manufacturing to develop shared standards and processes, enabling successful deliveries to our customers and collaborators at scale. You will engage with a worldwide community of open source developers through the Open-RMF project to help cultivate a robust, accessible software ecosystem for orchestration.

This role will require domestic and occasional international travel to visit partners and customers.

How your work moves the mission forward

  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver novel, cutting edge automation technology and robotic solutions to customers and partners.
  • Facilitate alignment on scope and timelines that capture needs while balancing feasibility, quality and acceptable risk. Own and protect these commitments as our plan of record to safeguard engineering focus amidst shifting priorities.
  • Motivate by creating clarity. For example, manage change by creating clarity on: What is changing? Why is the change needed? How did we decide on the change?
  • Own an up-to-date delivery status overview and manage related risks.
  • Guide the team to follow Intrinsic’s established standards and processes - collect feedback to evolve our operations to successfully deliver at scale.
  • Represent the factory orchestration product area in regular leadership updates and proactively raise flags where leadership guidance is needed for a successful delivery.
  • Align internal proprietary development with open source development, and vice-versa.
  • Evaluate and refine established standards to ensure they work in practice, while proactively closing communication gaps across channels to keep all key stakeholders aligned on critical milestones.
  • Guide open source contributors in how to productively participate in our open source project, e.g. steer issue tickets to be more clear and actionable, advise contributors on how to structure their pull requests, and ensure open source project tickets get the attention they need from the appropriate stakeholders.

Skills you will need to be successful

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience to confidently engage in technical discussions and articulate technical concepts, both in familiar and unfamiliar areas.
  • 7+ years of relevant experience across any area(s) of program management, manufacturing execution systems, warehouse management systems, fleet management, or logistics.
  • Experience in applying best practice technical program/project management approaches and comfort adapting and leveraging these in ambiguous settings with shifting priorities (project scoping/planning, risk analysis, timeline estimation, status tracking).
  • Strength in facilitating alignment of competing needs and constraints by leveraging critical thinking, e.g. when delivering novel technologies to established industries.
  • Experience in managing worldwide collaborative projects from start to end (including scope negotiation, stakeholder management, priority alignment).
  • Concise and clear communication, especially when working with external partners, collaborators, and customers.
  • Willingness to participate in cross-timezone meetings outside of regular working hours.

Skills that will differentiate your candidacy

  • Experienced in specialized technical program/project management for large-scale automation, e.g. understanding of typical phases and challenges in deploying a logistics or IoT system.
  • Systems understanding of conventional robotics and factory automation systems, including computer-integrated manufacturing and/or warehouse management systems.
  • Familiarity with robotics and automation technologies such as machine learning, computer vision, reactive sensor control, automated motion planning, and multi-agent orchestration—their potential, limitations and resulting project risks.
  • Comfort engaging and collaborating with large, diverse, worldwide, open source software communities.
