Job Description

About the team:

OpenAI’s charter calls on us to ensure the benefits of AI are distributed broadly and safely. Our Science team is building AI-native products that help scientists and researchers think more deeply, move faster, and accelerate discovery across disciplines.

Advancing science will be one of the defining impacts of AI. Scientists today face rising complexity, fragmented tools, and growing pressure to learn faster, reason across more information, and move from idea to insight with greater speed and rigor. We are building OpenAI for Science experiences to support scientific thinking, writing, analysis, and collaboration across fields such as math, physics, materials science, biology, chemistry, semiconductors, energy, and more.

About the role:

We are seeking an experienced product designer to craft the scientific product experiences of today and tomorrow. Design plays a critical role here. You’ll create products that are intuitive, elegant, and ambitious, and that push the boundaries of what AI-native tools can do for scientists and researchers. You’ll help shape experiences that support discovery itself, from early exploration and reasoning to writing, iteration, and collaboration.

In this role, you will:

  • Contribute to the overall design and product direction of OpenAI products for science.

  • Design and ship high-quality products and improvements, from early concepts to high-fidelity prototypes and visuals.

  • Partner closely with engineering, product management, AI research, and design peers to define product experiences and bring them to life.

  • Engage in user research to better understand how scientists and researchers work across domains, and use those insights to refine our products.

  • Contribute to and evolve our design system.

  • Help establish our design culture and grow our team.

  • Take ownership of ambiguous problems and drive them to practical, high-quality solutions.

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Are deeply motivated by advancing scientific discovery and expanding access to powerful tools for research and reasoning.

  • Have 8+ years of experience shipping large-scale software products.

  • Have a portfolio showcasing strong UX, UI, and interaction design skills, with a high bar for quality and craft.

  • Love thinking through complex interaction design problems.

  • Possess impactful communication and storytelling skills.

  • Enjoy tackling ambiguous problems and shaping them into a clear product vision.

  • Get excited about being immersed in the AI research process and defining how AI-first products should look and behave for scientists and researchers.
